Fiji: time to rise up?

Pacific Forum Chair and Niuean premier Toke Talagi has been making waves at the Pacific Forum by suggesting that Fijians "rise up" and take to the streets to force out their military regime. John Key and Kevin Rudd are aghast, but its a good idea. From the Philipines to Czechoslovakia to Serbia to the Ukraine, mass non-violent public protest has been a very successful tactic in evicting undemocratic, dictatorial regimes. If Fijians want their democracy back, taking to the streets and refusing to move is probably the best way to do it - and it is a prospect the other democracies in the Pacific should welcome, not condemn.
